Avis Car Rental at Basel
Avis Basel Airport
The Basel-Mulhouse Airport is located approximately 6km, or 3.7 miles northwest of Basel, Switzerland, and 22km, or 14 miles southeast of Mulhouse, France. It is one of the only airports in the world which is jointly operated by two countries, and is an airport of considerable size, with over four million passengers per annum. Together with the areas in Switzerland and France, the airport also serves Freiberg, in Germany. There are buses and taxis available for transport at airport, but car hire companies, such as Avis Basel-Mulhouse Airport provide vehicles which can be hired by arriving passengers. In a rented car from Avis is one of the best ways to explore the areas surrounding the airport, and the attractions in the nearby towns and cities.
Basel-Mulhouse Airport, or the EuroAirport, is recognised by three official IATA codes. BSL for Basel, MLH for Mulhouse and EAP as an international code. The airport is divided into two sections, one for French arrivals and departures, and the other for Swiss arrivals and departures. It is located in the French territory of the commune of Saint-Louis, but is connected to Basel by a customs road, which allows free movement to the airport for Swiss and German passengers. The Basel-Mulhouse Airport car hire companies each have rental offices on both sides of the terminal building, and Avis therefore serves French and Swiss Arrivals. Their rental counters can be found on the second floor of the building, in Hall 1 for customers arriving on the France side, and in Hall 4 for customers arriving on the Swiss side. For Basel, Avis is open from Monday to Friday between the hours of 07:00 and 23:00, on Saturdays from 08:30 to 22:00 and on Sundays from 09:00 to 23:00. For Mulhouse, Avis is open from 07:00 to 12:00 and from 12:30 to 21:30, Mondays to Fridays, on Saturdays from 09:00 to 14:30 and on Sundays from 05:30 to 21:30.
Each car hire company found at the airport have their own set of rental terms and conditions, and these will also differ depending on which side of the airport you hire a vehicle. The vehicles for France and Switzerland may differ somewhat as well. For both locations, the primary renter should be at least 21 years of age, and have held their valid drivers license for a minimum period of a year in their country of residence. However, 25 is the minimum age requirement for vehicles within certain car categories, such as Premium, Luxury and Luxury Wagon on the Swiss side and Full-Size, Standard, Convertible and Vans on the French side. Drivers between the ages of 21 and 24 will also pay higher rental rates, for young drivers insurance. A major credit card will be required for payments, such as American Express, Diners Club, Mastercard / Eurocard, Visa, but not Kyriel, Maestro, Indigo or Electron cards. In Switzerland, the Discover Card is accepted as well.
Avis one way hires, or cross border rentals, may be allowed from both locations. In France, cars are permitted to all European countries, except for Greece, Turkey, Eastern Europe, Commonwealth of Independent States, Baltic States and the Republic of Ireland. Vehicles may be driven in the United Kingdom as well, as long as they are returned to the mainland. Vehicles from France travelling on Swiss highways must purchase a special tax sticker, known as the Swiss Hwy. Sticker, at a cost of 40.00 SFR. The stickers are available at border crossings. From Basel-Mulhouse Airport, one way hires are convenient for customers who will not be returning to the airport, as the vehicle can be delivered to another rental location. There are usually no additional costs for the service if the vehicle is returned within the same country as it was collected.
On the Swiss side of the Basel-Mulhouse Airport, Economy cars such as the Skoda Fabia come with the cheapest rental rates, and have features such as air conditioning and CD players. They are also cars which are fuel efficient, and have a manual transmission. Compact cars similar to the Volkswagen Golf and Opel Meriva are also popular, with room for about five passengers. Intermediate, Standard or Fullsize Wagons may be ideal for families with extra luggage items, while Minivans and Fullsize Vans offer more space for passengers. Wagons are similar to the Ford Focus C-Max, Ford Grand C-Max and the Volkswagen Passat, and Avis Vans for seven passengers include the Renault Espace.
Passengers on the French side of Basel-Mulhouse Airport can hire smaller cars similar to the Renault Twingo, Opel Corsa or Citroen C3, while family-sized vehicles are similar to the Renault Laguna and Renault Scenic. Luxury cars are available as well, such as the Mercedes E Class. Keep in mind that larger and specialty vehicles should be booked as early as possible, as they can be subject to low availability.
The majority of Basel-Mulhouse Airport car rental companies support the needs of all their passengers, including those with physical disabilities, by offering equipment such as hand controls. Avis hand controls are offered to individuals with a lower limb deficiency, and should always be reserved in advance. From Basel-Mulhouse Airport, hand controls are free of charge.
