Car Hire at Biarritz Airport - Information

Biarritz Airport is officially known as the Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne Airport, and is recognised by the airport code of BIQ. Although a relatively small France airport, it is important in terms of its location, serving a number of large towns nearby, and the last of the French seaside resorts before the border of Spain. It is located approximately 5km, or 3 miles from the town of Biarritz, and in the departments of Landes and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. It is also one of the French airports that are located in the Aquitaine region of the country. Exploring this interesting part of France is best in a rented car, from one of the Biarritz Airport car hire companies. A hire car is the most convenient way to reach all the attractions of the area, and is often considered to be the best form of transport for travellers.

From its single terminal building, Biarritz Airport handles around a million passengers per annum, and is well equipped with facilities for the needs of all types of passengers. The airport welcomes disabled persons, and there are shops, restaurants, a cash dispenser, a tourist office and conference facilities available. Within the arrival area, passengers will find the car hire companies of the airport, which include Hertz, Europcar, Avis, National, Alamo, Easycar, Sixt and Auto Europa. All these companies are international, with branches across the world, and are well known for their expert services. Hertz and Auto Europa are two of the largest car rental providers on the globe, each with over 8,000 rental locations, while National is popular amongst business renters and Alamo has become one of favourite car hire companies for leisure customers. Easycar is a newer company, with just over ten years of experience, but is an excellent choice for those who enjoy all-inclusive rental rates and friendly service. Sixt and Avis offer a wide range of vehicles for hire, as well as several innovative car hire services that make renting a car a simple and hassle-free experience.

The Biarritz Airport car rental companies require their primary renters and all additional drivers to be at least 21 years of age, and to have a valid drivers license. However, certain companies may have lower age requirements, while certain vehicle categories will require the customer to be 23 or 25 years of age or older. All drivers under the age of 25 will also pay a higher rental rate, for young drivers insurance. This is a small amount added to each day of car hire, and for each additional underage driver registered on the rental agreement, usually up until a maximum of ten rental days. Most driving licenses that are printed in English are accepted, but sometimes an International Driving Permit is required. In order to pay for the vehicle, the primary renter will need a major credit card in his/her name, such as American Express, Diners Club, Eurocard, MasterCard or Visa. Debit cards and cash are not usually accepted for payments.

Vehicles of the Biarritz Airport car hire companies are mostly divided into various car groups, for example, Mini, Economy, Compact, Intermediate, Standard and Full-size, and are booked and priced according to their category. Other car groups that may be available include Van, SUV, Premium, Luxury and Convertible. Luxury and Premium cars are more elegant, usually of a BMW, Volvo or Mercedes make, while Vans are larger vehicles, able to accommodate up to seven or nine passengers. Examples include the Citroen Grand Picasso C4, Opel Zafira, Citroen Jumpy and the Renault Traffic Combi. Customers who only require a smaller car can enjoy lower car rental rates, and can drive something similar to the Renault Twingo, Opel Corsa, Citroen C3 or Peugeot 207. Families in need of a more spacious vehicle can choose a car similar to the Ford Mondeo, Peugeot 3008, VW Passat or Audi A4. Station wagons may also be available, and they are ideal for those with a heavier luggage load.

The Biarritz Airport car rental companies offer cars of only the latest models, which are in excellent overall and mechanical condition. They often have nice features as well, such as air conditioning, power steering, power locks and windows, ABS brakes, cruise control and driver and passenger airbags. Many cars hired from the airport include a satellite navigation system in their rentals, however, for those that don’t, customers can hire a GPS for their journey. Other items for hire include baby and booster seats and luggage racks. From Biarritz Airport, hand controls for disabled drivers may be available, and one way hires can be arranged for most vehicle categories. Although most optional items of equipment cost a few extra Euros, hand controls are free of charge, however, they should be reserved in advance. For customers who are not returning to Biarritz Airport, one way hires are the best option, as it allows the vehicle to be delivered to a different car rental location, either within the country of France, or even in another country.

The road network in France is excellent, and main highways link all major towns and cities. Nearby Biarritz Airport, the A63 leads south towards the Spanish border, passing Bidart, Guéthary and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a pretty fishing port, and north towards Labenne. The A64 is another large road nearby, and will take drivers east, towards Orthez. Although Biarritz is a charming town to explore on foot, a car is most convenient for visiting all the wonderful beaches in the area, and to reach some of the museums that are popular amongst visitors.
